Gillian Friedman, MD, completed her medical training, residency in psychiatry, and fellowship training in women's mental health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is board certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Friedman has worked in public psychiatry in California for the past two decades, treating patients with severe and persistent mental illness, including a focus on safe and effective treatment of psychotic mental illness and substance use disorders (in particular, opioid use disorder) during pregnancy and postpartum. She currently serves as Acting Medical Director at Patton State Hospital in southern California, currently the country's largest psychiatric hospital with a population comprising forensically and civilly committed patients. Dr. Friedman has additional private practice experience treating a range of women's mental health issues, including trauma and eating disorders.
