A new feature at Psych Congress in 2023, each Foundations in Psychopharmacology session will dive deep into one specific therapeutic drug class, such as antidepressants or antipsychotics. These sessions are distinct in their foundational emphasis on both long-standing medications often appropriate as first-line therapies, as well as additional first-line options and adjunctive treatments. Foundations sessions may be particularly valuable for early-career psychopharmacologists and those looking for a detailed look at the when and the why of medication selection as well as access-related challenges and considerations that may affect treatment decisions.

This session will delve into the foundational approaches to antipsychotic therapies, examining both traditional medicines and new treatments currently available on the market. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of action behind antipsychotic medications and the ways in which they can be used to treat schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.

Learning Objectives:

Recognize and differentiate among the different FDA-approved antipsychotic treatment options for schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, adjunctive use in major depressive disorder, and agitation associated with Alzheimer’s dementia
Recognize that aside from schizophrenia, not all antipsychotics are approved for the same disorders
Apply the above to patients at different stages and forms of the illness, from acute treatment to long-term maintenance
